The second round of Closing the Gap Refresh consultations kicked off on 24 July 2018, with 48 representatives from Indigenous peak bodies meeting in Canberra. The second round of consultations is focussed on testing draft targets with stakeholders who have contributed to the Closing the Gap Refresh process.
The consultation began with an update on the Refresh process to date, followed by discussion on possible draft targets that could be considered by First Ministers. Areas requiring further policy work were also identified.
Peak bodies in attendance included the First Peoples Disability Network Australia, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services and the Lowitja Institute.
A series of roundtables will be held in each state and territory over the coming weeks to ensure the draft targets reflect the feedback received in submissions and consultations held so far.
Outcomes from these consultations will inform Commonwealth, State and Territory governments as they work to develop a revised Closing the Gap agenda.
In line with COAG’s agreement in February 2018, the new Closing the Gap framework, national and state targets, performance indicators and accountabilities are expected to agreed and announced in October 2018.
